The Evidence for God – Too Much or Too Little? – Part II

One area that I would like to address is our need, not just to rely on the evidence for God’s existence, but our need to trust Him even when we don’t have overwhelming evidence. One of the greatest revelations I have ever received from the Lord is that He doesn’t want to be analyzed to death but that He wants to be loved and trusted.

Perhaps, this is the reason Albert Einstein couldn’t believe in a personal God. Yes, he couldn’t help but realize that our universe cries out for the existence of God. While he believed that God existed because of the evidence he understood about our universe, he couldn’t come to trust in a personal God because he was too concerned about getting all the answers to his questions addressed before he would place his trust in a personal God.

But this is exactly what God doesn’t want. He doesn’t overwhelm us with absolute proof of His existence because then our relationship would not be based on trust and our own free will, but instead we would have no other choice but to believe that He exists. God gave Einstein all the proof he needed to know He was real but Einstein refused to take the next step of entering into a personal relationship with Him based on trust.

The book of nature (called natural revelation) is sufficient to show us that there is a God. This is more apparent now than at any other time in human history. However, this book is insufficient to help us to trust God – for this we need the book of special revelation – the Bible. For the Bible tells us what our real condition is – as sinners – and our need for a Savior. The book of nature leads us to know that God exists and the Bible helps us to enter into a trusting relationship with Him personally.

Our supremely orderly and complex universe shows us that there must be a God behind its creation and maintenance, but doesn’t tell us who this God is or why we need Him. For that we need the Bible to open our blind spiritual eyes to who God really is and why we need to enter into a relationship of trust with Him. Einstein, in the end, never made this leap of faith and trust in the one true God of the Bible.

Why Extra Evidence to This Generation?

I totally agree that today’s generation has some amazing evidence that God exists and that the Bible is a divine book. From science, corroborating what the Bible has shared all along about the vastness of our universe, to archeology proving so many of the things that the Bible says in relation to kings and cities, we indeed have powerful evidence for the veracity of the Scriptures and as a result the existence of God.

I think that because we are so advanced, as far as technology goes, that we have become arrogant and sadly taken all the credit for our advances instead of giving God the credit. As a result, God has decided to give this arrogant generation more than enough evidence to leave it without excuse as to His existence.

But I also believe that since many have bought the lie of Darwinian evolution God has allowed man the privilege to explore and discover the incredible complexity and genius of the human cell. This awesome complexity should show us that we are indeed fearfully and wonderfully made and could never have come into existence through blind chance and natural selection. Darwinian evolution was man’s answer to getting rid of any need for God. So, God decided to allow man to see how it is utterly impossible for a human cell to have evolved.

I believe that God is a high-tech God and is always one step ahead of man’s attempt to disprove His existence.  Perhaps Louis Pasteur said it best when he shared: “The more I study nature, the more I stand amazed at the work of the Creator. Science brings men nearer to God.”1
