The Great Need for Christian Revival in America

In America today the clarion call for a fresh revival in the church of Jesus Christ is desperately needed. In the woke world we find our country enveloped in, sin has not only become acceptable but legalized and paraded about to the chagrin of many evangelicals. Sadly, even in many churches more time is spent on talking about racial equality and the social gospel than the real gospel of Jesus Christ.

While the non-believer is clearly under the control of Satan, the church is drifting away from its moorings and forgetting that sin is an abomination to our holy God and unless we jettison it from the church of Christ and put back on robes of holiness we stand in danger of God’s great judgement coming to our shores.

My friends, what is needed is a fresh and mighty revival in America to stem this satanic tide of wokeness and legalized sin. But just what is revival? John Piper gives us a good description:

“In the history of the church, the term revival in its most biblical sense has meant a sovereign work of God in which the whole region of many churches, many Christians has been lifted out of spiritual indifference and worldliness into conviction of sin, earnest desires for more of Christ and his word, boldness in witness, purity of life, lots of conversions, joyful worship, renewed commitment to missions. You feel God has moved here. And basically revival, then, is God doing among many Christians at the same time or in the same region, usually, what he is doing all the time in individual Christian’s lives as people get saved and individually renewed around the world.”1

May the following quotes give you a flavor for just what revival is and how we may obtain it.2

“In revival, God is not concerned about filling empty churches, He is concerned about filling empty hearts.” ~ Leonard Ravenhill

“Every revival in history seems to be the result of a few people becoming so hungry for God that they wanted Him more than oxygen. Those who have such hunger will not be denied. It’s time to seek a revival that becomes the most famous address in the world. It’s time to seek a move of God that won’t quit moving.” ~ Rick Joyner

“The depth of our repentance will determine the depth of our revival.” ~ Frank Bartleman

“If we want revivals, we must revive our reverence for the Word of God.” ~ Charles Spurgeon

“No man is greater than his prayer life. The pastor who is not praying is playing; the people who are not praying are straying. We have many organizers, but few agonizers; many players and payers, few pray-ers; many singers, few clingers; lots of pastors, few wrestlers; many fears, few tears; much fashion, little passion; many interferers, few intercessors; many writers, but few fighters. Failing here, we fail everywhere.” ~ Leonard Ravenhill

“Study the history of revival. God has always sent revival in the darkest days. Oh, for a mighty, sweeping revival today!” ~ Adrian Rogers

“Prayer is the burden of revival; repentance is the breakthrough of revival; evangelism is the blessing of revival; holiness is the bounty of revival.” ~ Steve Camp

“Surely revival delays because prayer decays.” ~ Leonard Ravenhill

“If God’s people hunger deeply enough, God will hear and send revival.  God requires more than casual prayers for revival. He wants His people to hunger and thirst for His mighty working. To seek God’s face is far more than occasionally mentioning revival in our prayer. It involves repeated and prolonged prayer. It requires holy determination in prayer, examining ourselves to see if anything in our lives is hindering God.” ~ Wesley L Duewel

“We will never meet God in revival until we have first met Him in brokenness.” ~ Nancy Leigh DeMoss

“Have you noticed how much praying for revival has been going on of late – and how little revival has resulted? I believe the problem is that we have been trying to substitute praying for obeying, and it simply will not work.” ~ Aiden Wilson Tozer

“You never have to advertise a fire. Everyone comes running when there’s a fire. Likewise, if your church is on fire, you will not have to advertise it. The community will already know it.” ~ Leonard Ravenhill

“If revival is being withheld from us it is because some idol remains still enthroned; because we still insist in placing our reliance in human schemes; because we still refuse to face the unchangeable truth that It is not by might, but by My Spirit.” ~ Jonathan Goforth

“Our mistake is that we want God to send revival on our terms. We want to get the power of God into our hands, to call it to us that it may work for us in promoting and furthering our kind of Christianity. We want still to be in charge, guiding the chariot through the religious sky in the direction we want it to go, shouting “Glory to God,” but modestly accepting a share of the glory for ourselves in a nice inoffensive sort of way. We are calling on God to send fire on our altars, completely ignoring the fact that they are OUR altars and not God’s.” ~ Aiden Wilson Tozer

“Revival is the visitation of God which brings to life Christians who have been sleeping and restores a deep sense of God’s near presence and holiness. Thence springs a vivid sense of sin and a profound exercise of heart in repentance, praise, and love, with an evangelistic outflow.” ~ J. I. Packer

“Revival is the Spirit’s passion within the believer to know and to obey the total will of God.” ~ Leonard Ravenhill

“Revival is simply New Testament Christianity, the saints going back to normal.” ~ Vance Havner

“The true man of God is heartsick, grieved at the worldliness of the Church, grieved at the toleration of sin in the Church, grieved at the prayerlessness in the Church. He is disturbed that the corporate prayer of the Church no longer pulls down the strongholds of the devil.” ~ Leonard Ravenhill

“Revival is God revealing Himself to men in awesome holiness and irresistible power.” ~ Arthur Wallis

Revival is a divinely initiated work in which God’s people pray, repent of their sin, and return to a holy, Spirit-filled, obedient, love-relationship with God.” ~ Henry Blackaby
