Life is full of delights. Eating a good steak dinner (maybe not for vegans), going on a vacation to a place on your bucket list, and spending a great date night with your spouse are just a few of the things that most people would consider delightful.
The other day my wife asked me what makes me most happy. As I pondered this question, I immediately thought to myself, the better question is what brings me the most delight and joy in life. That made the answer so much easier. The following quote from Brother Lawrence sums up my response: “There is not in the world a kind of life more sweet and delightful than that of a continual conversation with God.”1
Spending quality time alone with Jesus, praying, and conversing with my Lord is the most awesome and delightful activity of my day. You see, I believe we are all wired for relationships, yes with each other, but much more so with our heavenly Father. As I thought about being wired for worship, dialogue, and intimacy with Jesus, the following two quotes by Augustine came to mind: “Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.”2 And: “To fall in love with God is the greatest romance; to seek him the greatest adventure; to find him, the greatest human achievement.”3
Scripture also tells us: “Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4). I love this verse because when we delight in the Lord, He gives us the deep desires of our heart, which are also the Lord’s desires for us. It’s as if both our desires and the Lord’s desires become one and the same, since Jesus wants us to delight in the precious relationship we can have with each other. And the more we fall in love with the Lord, the more we will want to do His will and obey His commands and delight in what He delights in.
My friends, delighting in the Lord is life’s greatest joy—a wonderful privilege open to all His children. If you are having problems delighting in Jesus, then take time to reflect on all His blessings to you and the ultimate privilege of knowing that one day you will spend eternity with your Maker!
