The Mysterious Nature of Life and Death

empty forest

Have you ever contemplated how life begins? When a sperm and egg cell unite your life begins. At conception the most amazing thing happens – your life enters the universe. But oh, what a life! That single cell in nine short months will transform itself into a 30 trillion cell human being. And have you ever stopped to realize that all the information that will become you had to reside in that one original cell. Your DNA molecules had to be preprogrammed to know when to become two cells, then four cells, and when to form your tiny heart, brains, and other organs. It also had to know how to form your digestive, circulatory, respiratory, and all the other complex systems in your human body. That one original cell had to know when to start the beating of your human heart and the thinking in your tiny brain.

Imagine, that one original single cell knew in advance that it would be forming a human eye, with all of its complex biochemical makeup and somehow telling it when to see. Can you just imagine how much information must have resided in that one original single cell to produce the 30 trillion cells that are to become you! Yes, my friends, life is indeed a mystery that only an infinitely powerful God could have created. For you see preprogramming had to be embedded in that one single cell. And while the nine month progression from one cell to 30 trillion cells is essentially on autopilot in our mother’s womb, our gracious heavenly Father is in reality overseeing the entire process. I don’t know about you but the amount of information stored in that one single cell that will grow into a tiny baby is far beyond my human comprehension.

Sadly, as Christians, we know that because of sin, one day we will physically die and all of our ultra-complex systems and organs will cease to function. And just as God creates life at conception, He chooses to take life when, in His prerogative, He feels the time is right. Only God ordains the days of life He deposits in our account for it is only God that gives life and takes life.

Science, for hundreds of years, has tried to find out how life begins but this field of research is ill-equipped to understand the deep mystery of the beginning of life. I believe that the question of the origin of life will always remain one of the secret things that only the Lord knows. Our role is to thank God for the life He has given us and to live it to glorify His name.

While the timing of the beginning and ending of our lives remains in the hands of God our eternal destiny lies beyond the grave and the choices we make in this life will determine our eternal abode. As I mentioned earlier because of sin we all will physically die one day. But praise God, Jesus has provided a way to reverse the eternal effects of sin. And that way is to be born again by accepting Christ into our heart through faith. Once we do this we will experience the joy in knowing we will live forever!

May I leave you with something Pastor Steven Lawson once shared on the mysterious nature of life and death: “If you are only born once, you will die twice. But if you are born twice, you will only die once.”1
