This at first may seem like a strange title for a devotion on the Bible, but let me explain. During the early 1980’s, the Tylenol scare swept across our nation. Several people died as a result of taking Tylenol capsules that were laced with cyanide. Since that one incident, a dramatic change has taken place in our entire medicine and food industry. Many medications and now foods are being specially packaged with safety seals and other tamper-resistant devices.
The damage to Tylenol sales and its reputation was great indeed due to this unfortunate event. The usefulness of Tylenol as a pain reliever and fever reducer is of unquestionable value. Yet it took a great deal of expensive special advertising to restore public confidence in this wonder drug. Tylenol was the victim of a great deal of unwarranted bad press. But because of its intrinsic beneficial nature to mankind, it was able to survive the scare it underwent. Today Tylenol sales are tremendous.
The same kind of unwarranted “bad press” has been leveled against the Holy Scriptures more than once throughout their long history. They have been attacked, criticized, assailed, mocked and even dismissed by many groups of people and from every angle you can possibly imagine.
People down through the ages have stated that the Bible is not historical and is full of errors in the realm of history. Critics have long contended that the Bible is a dull book for old people. It has been called a crutch that people turn to in times of trouble. Many of our leading scientists view a belief in this book as impossible based on what our science tells us today. You can’t believe in science and the Bible at the same time, they tell us. From being labeled outdated to outlandish, from faulty to foolish, the Bible has been the recipient of a great deal of bad press.
I have addressed many of these challenges that have been hurled at God’s Word in previous devotions. Below are five specific challenges that people have raised, down through the centuries, against the Bible with the link to one of my devotions that addresses the issue. Please take a look at these previous devotions if you have often wondered why we should trust the Bible:
