What’s in Your Heart?

red leaf trees near the road

Before I gave my heart to the Lord I thought I was a pretty good person. I did lots of nice things for people and tried to follow the golden rule. However, shortly after coming to Christ I read the book of Jeremiah and was startled when I read (Jeremiah 17:9) which said: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?”

After meditating on this verse, I began to realize that mankind has a heart problem and if he deeply examines his motives he will realize that his heart or his conscience, in his corrupt and fallen state, is deceitful above all things. In fact, the unregenerate man often calls evil good, and good evil. Not only that but our heart is so deceitful and broken that we have no capacity to seek after God. But praise God that the Creator of the universe sought after us and did everything possible to open our eyes to see that we are indeed sinners in desperate need of a new heart and a Savior. My friends we would never seek God on our own unless He did the drawing first.

I, for one, am so grateful that God opened my eyes and performed spiritual surgery and gave me a new heart that now desires to please God and love everyone. But just because I have a new heart doesn’t automatically mean I won’t be tempted by the world to wander on occasion from the Lord. I love what Charles Spurgeon said when he shared: “You must keep all earthly treasures out of your heart, and let Christ be your treasure, and let him have your heart.”1

Spurgeon’s quote lines up with Scripture for we read: “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:19–21).

While material possessions are nice and fame is attractive they can’t compare with the joy of having an intimate relationship with Jesus. Is Christ your treasure? If He is then all other things will pale in comparison to knowing Him. When we truly give our heart to Jesus He will become the sweetest and most amazing friend, mentor, and Savior anyone could ever know.

My prayer is that you spend more time reading the four Gospels and asking God to help you see how wonderful Jesus really is. I believe that the more you read the Gospels the more you will fall in love with their real Author – Jesus Christ! As Spurgeon said: “…let Christ be your treasure, and let him have your heart.” I guarantee when you give Him your whole heart He will bless you with untold riches that will fill your heart to overflowing!
