As a Christian have you ever taken the time to examine the condition of your heart? Now, I don’t mean its physical condition, which goes without saying that you should get a yearly annual checkup, which includes checking to see if your heart is pumping blood properly and beating correctly. What I am talking about here is the spiritual condition of your heart.
For example, a heart that is right with God may be broken, but it is not spiritually divided. Better to be shattered than hardened. And if you want to be spiritually strong your heart must be surrendered to God. Sadly, many Christians don’t take a daily inventory of the spiritual condition of their heart and as a result the state of their heart can often be found to be divided, which is a very dangerous place to be. And the reason can be seen in the following quote from A. B. Simpson: “A divided heart loses both worlds.”1
My friends you can’t serve God with half a heart. Imagine telling your wife that you love her with half of your heart. I can just imagine her thinking who are you in love with the other half. If we apply this same logic to Jesus, then He has every right to question what other gods you may be serving besides Him.
The Scriptures are clear that we must serve God with our whole heart if we expect Him to work on our behalf. (2 Chronicles 16:9) tells us: “For the eyes of the Lord roam throughout the earth, so that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His.”
May I challenge you to check the condition of your heart daily to see if God is in the center of this essential organ, or if your motives and desires are centered on you first. If the latter condition prevails then it’s time to ask God to reorient the beat of your heart by placing Jesus back on His rightful throne at the center of your heart. In closing, I leave you with these wise words from Charles Spurgeon: “You must keep all earthy treasures out of your heart, and let Christ be your treasure, and let Him have your heart.”2
