Finding God shouldn’t be that difficult. After all the Bible tells us: “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” (Psalm 19:1). Abraham Lincoln once said: “I can see how it might be possible for a man to look down upon earth and be an atheist, but I cannot conceive how he could look up into the heavens and say that there is no God.”1 Charles Spurgeon added: “I am persuaded that men think there is no God because they wish there were none. They find it hard to believe in God, and to go on in sin, so they try to get an easy conscience by denying his existence.”2
And when it comes to believing in Jesus as God, I believe that most people intrinsically know what Jesus stands for. They are willing to acknowledge that Jesus is a great moral teacher but to go the next step and call Him God is just too much since that would mean they would have to stop their sinful lifestyle; which sadly, most are not willing to do. Charlie Campbell rightly states: “Some people say, ‘There’s no evidence God exists!’ but when asked, ‘What are some of the books you’ve read that lay out a case for God?’ – Crickets! Most are not looking for God or considering the evidence. They are running from God. They’re looking for God about as much as a criminal is looking for a police officer.”3
Not only that but all of mankind knows deep in their hearts that there is something more than this present life for we read in (Ecclesiastes 3:11): “He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.” So not only does man know that there must be a God but he also knows that he will somehow exist for eternity. Man can hide from you and me but he can’t hide from what he knows deep in his heart to be true. So, what does he do since he can’t deny the existence of God – he suppresses the truth of God and goes on sinning. And it’s this combination of suppressing the truth about God and man’s pride, that he is the captain of his own ship, that causes him to search for meaning in all the wrong places.
Thankfully God is patient and when man finally begins to realize he is a sinner and there must be a God, He will do everything possible to draw that soul to Jesus. But the Scriptures are also clear that there won’t be many that really want to know the truth about Jesus. For we read in (Matthew 7:13-14): “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” Our role, therefore, as Christians is to pray that God opens the hearts of the lost we come in contact with and to share the gospel by word and lifestyle. And we should never underestimate the power of believing prayer and the word of God for this combination has brought many a sinner to the Savior!
