Why Your Worldview Matters

Today we are going to talk about the importance of having a biblical worldview and why the worldview you hold to is so important.

For example, if your worldview is that life doesn’t begin at conception but at birth, and you support abortion, then you have just condoned 65 million abortions in America in the last 50 years. Or if you believe that marriage should be open to any two consenting adults then your worldview has just supported gay marriage. And depending on which holy book your worldview embraces, if it is the Holy Bible, it will teach you that you are created in the image of God, with the result that life can be full of joy and meaning. However, if your holy book is the evolutionist Bible – Charles Darwin’s 1859 book called The Origin of Species By Means of Natural Selection, your worldview will lead to a life of morbid despair and catastrophic negative consequences.

My friends Christianity is the only worldview that provides us with satisfactory answers to so many of life’s big questions, such as origins, meaning, morality, and destiny. (Genesis 1) tells us all we need to know about the origin of the world and humanity. As far as meaning goes I believe the Westminster Shorter Catechism asks the question and then gives us the answer when it says: “What is the chief end of man?” It then shares the answer: “Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.” When it comes to living a moral life all we need to do is read the four gospels and see how Jesus lived His life. His perfect way of living should be an example for all of us. And when it comes to our destiny, Christianity provides us with the ultimate answer – we were created to have eternal life through knowing Jesus.

I can’t think of a more wonderful worldview than the Christian one. It is full of joy and rich meaning and is so intellectually sound based on solid evidence. We can be confident that when we cast our lot with Jesus we have made a wise and life changing decision.

But if you cast your worldview lot with evolution then just look at some of the consequences.

Implication 1 – If evolution is true then God doesn’t exist

If you believe in evolution then chance has to replace God as the reason for your being here. A belief in evolution and God are mutually exclusive. And the idea that God exists and used evolution to bring us into existence makes no sense since God would never use death (a key ally in the evolution process) as a means of creating humanity.

Implication 2 – Evolution leads to atheism and the great atrocities of the twentieth century

If evolution is true then her twin sister, atheism must also be true. Atheism is the only game in town for those who believe in creation from nothing by nothing. And whether evolutionists like to admit it or not, ideas have consequences and in the case of their worldview without a God they have proven to be catastrophic. Take for example the case of Adolf Hitler. What would possess a man to kill over 6 million Jews and 4 million other ethnic groups? The answer: the theory of evolution. Hitler believed that the German Aryan race was superior to all other races and, therefore, had the right to exterminate all inferior races. “Survival of the fittest” was his justification. And sadly, over just a few decades, Stalin, Hitler, and Mao together murdered as many as 100 million people.

Implication 3 – Evolution can’t answer the big questions of life

Just what are the big questions of life? There are basically three big questions we all want to know the answers to. Where did we come from? Why are we here? And where do we go when we die? To sum up if one believes in evolution he, first of all, is going against all reason. Second, he must believe that there is no law, no morality, and no real standard to judge others. Third, he can have no hope for a future, no meaning in the present, and no intrinsic value as a person. And fourth, when you worship the creature more than the Creator you profess to be wise but in reality are a fool.

Apologist Greg Koukl sums up why belief in evolution carries such a morbid outlook to life when he says: “If Darwinism is true, then there is no purpose or meaning to life, there is no morality, there’s no qualitative difference between humans and animals, there’s no life after death, and there’s no purpose to human history. Now, are you trying to tell me that it doesn’t really matter if people believe we evolved or not?”1
