Have you ever wondered why the Bible puts such a high value on having godly wisdom? Notice I said here godly wisdom and not worldly wisdom. Worldly wisdom acts by analyzing and acting on the knowledge and facts that it possesses. Sadly, the worldly human or unregenerate man only knows about worldly, and material matters and nothing of the things of the Lord. And without an understanding of who God is, His character, and His will, worldly wisdom falls very short of true godly wisdom and according to the Scriptures is actually folly. For we read: “Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, ‘He catches the wise in their own craftiness;’ and again, ‘The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.’” (1 Corinthians 3:18-20). So, in reality worldly wisdom should be avoided.
But godly wisdom is a whole different matter. It is often the exact opposite of worldly wisdom. For example, worldly wisdom avoids the Bible while godly wisdom submits to its teachings. Worldly wisdom trust in earthly possessions while godly wisdom trusts in treasures in heaven. And worldly wisdom views trials as negative, while godly wisdom views them as necessary to build up our maturity and faith in God.
So why should we desire wisdom above all else. Well for starters let’s see what the Scriptures tell us. (Proverbs 3:13-15) says: “Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.” And if we read the next few verses in (Proverbs 3) we get a small glimpse of just why wisdom is so desirable: “Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her; those who hold her fast will be blessed.” (Proverbs 3:16-18).
In addition, having godly wisdom means that you know God’s will for your life and you possess the mind of Christ. As a result, you will be walking on the best path of life possible – one that will fill you with rich meaning and great joy. You will also be doing things that please the Creator of the universe and as a result will bring Him great glory and there is nothing more awesome than this.
Having godly wisdom will also help you put everything that happens to you negatively in life in its proper perspective. For example, when trials come your way you can say as the psalmist shared in (Psalm 119:71): “It is good for me that I have been afflicted, That I may learn Your statutes.” Thus, true wisdom turns afflictions into opportunities to grow in the Word as well as closer to Jesus. And the more you grow in the Word, the more wisdom you will accumulate. True wisdom understands the value of knowing the Scriptures and how being full of the Word of God will extend to you untold blessings. No wonder wisdom is so sought after – she is the pathway to an eternity of blessings!
He catches the wise in their own craftiness;’ and again, ‘The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.’” (1 Corinthians 3:18-20). So, in reality worldly wisdom should be avoided.
Not only are the “thoughts of the wise futile,” and their “worldly wisdom” to be “avoided,” but Paul tells Timothy that he is to avoid these “lovers of pleasure” themselves and the futility of their thoughts means they are “always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth.” These unbelievers “oppose the truth, being corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith.”
So, not only avoid their worldly wisdom but avoid those who hold to this worldly wisdom altogether. It is futile and corrupt.
The good news Paul gives us in the same context is that these same people today who “oppose the truth” “will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all.” Remember this outlook whenever you think evil has the upper hand in politics, education, or world affairs. Say it again, “They will not get very far” because they deny the “power of godliness.”
