Accidents Happen – but You’re Not One of Them

Imagine telling your child that they are here by accident. Well for the millions who believe in Darwinian evolution that is the only logical conclusion they can share when their child asks them how they came into this world. For in the final analysis for those who believe in Darwinian evolution all human life is the chance random collision of molecules that accidentally created you! And since Darwinian evolution is a completely unguided process the conclusion that you are a total accident is inevitable.

But for the Christian the idea that we are here by accident couldn’t be farther from the truth. For you see accidents aren’t created in the image of God. And accidents don’t have a divine purpose in life. In fact, if you are here by accident what purpose can you actually have? Author Max Lucado shares this wonderful thought: “You weren’t an accident. You weren’t mass produced. You aren’t an assembly-line product. You were deliberately planned, specifically gifted, and lovingly positioned on the Earth by the Master Craftsman.”1

My friends you are a masterpiece of the creative genius of God and our God doesn’t make mistakes or create accidents. However, some contend then why are millions of people born blind or deaf. Why would a good God allow these “accidents” to take place. I believe that God, in these cases, has allowed these imperfections in our human body to take place because they are part of His master plan. And if we are willing, He will use them and us to be vessels that will bring Him glory – which is the highest privilege we can be a part of in the kingdom of God.

For you see in God’s economy He is even sovereign over the disabilities that many people are born with. We clearly see God taking responsibility in this area when He tells Moses: “The Lord said to him, ‘Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the Lord?’” (Exodus 4:11).

In addition, we know that God allows suffering in His sovereignty for a greater good. We see this in the case of all the suffering that Joseph had to go through. When his brothers sold him into slavery little did they know that this was all part of God’s sovereign plan to have Joseph appear before Pharoah, interpret his dreams, and later become his prime minister. As a result, he was able to save millions from starvation. (Genesis 50:20) shows us how God can use evil and suffering for the greater good for we read: “But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive.”

In conclusion you are not some evolutionary accident that has no purpose. Instead, you are a beloved child of the Creator of the universe that loved you so much that even when we went astray from Him, by virtue of our sinful lifestyle, He sent his own Son to die for our sins and bring us back into a special relationship with Him that, praise God, will last for eternity. For in the last analysis we can either believe that we are here by evolutionary accident or by divine design. And I for one am happy to cast my lot with Jesus and not Darwin!
