Blessed Are Those Who Keep His Word

In (Psalm 119) the psalmist uses the word “keep” over two dozen times. In (Psalm 119:2) we read: “Blessed are those who keep His testimonies, Who seek Him with the whole heart!” I believe the psalmist clearly understood that when we keep God’s precious Word blessings are sure to follow. While the many admonitions to keep the Word in (Psalm 119) are the duty of the Christian they should also be the Christian’s delight. While the word obedience often carries a negative connotation, this is not the case for the psalmist here for we read: “Your testimonies also are my delight and my counselors.” (Psalm 119:24) and “And I will delight myself in Your commandments, which I love.” (Psalm 119:47).

The more we fall in love with Jesus the more we will realize that keeping His words are the pathway to a myriad of blessings. For example, I can think of no greater blessing than to know when I keep God’s commandments I am doing something that pleases the Lord and puts a smile on His face. In turn this act of obedience will automatically bring great joy to my heart. No wonder the psalmist proclaims: “Your testimonies are wonderful; Therefore, my soul keeps them.” (Psalm 119:129). Another rich blessing that follows keeping God’s Word is the great peace that floods the soul. (Isaiah 26:3) says: “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” I love this verse because when we stay close to Jesus and obey His commandments we can relax and enjoy abundant peace since we are under His protective umbrella. I concur with the psalmist when he shares: “Great peace have those who love Your law, and nothing causes them to stumble.” (Psalm 119:165).

As one reads (Psalm 119) a sense of excitement should take hold as the psalmist mixes obedience with delight, peace and joy, and praise to God for the privilege to learn His great Word. Just listen to how the psalmist thanks God for more knowledge of His Word: “My lips shall utter praise, for You teach me Your statutes.” (Psalm 119:171).

I encourage you to take time to read this magnificent psalm and meditate on each and every verse. After finishing all 176 verses I guarantee, like the psalmist, you will be smitten with the great joy of reading this most precious book – the Holy Bible! And like the psalmist you will proclaim: “I rejoice at Your word as one who finds great treasure.” (Psalm 119:162)!
