As Christians it is so important to know how special we are to God. We live in a very negative world and sadly millions of Americans have a low self-image of themselves and suffer from intense feelings of inferiority. For those non-Christians, who hold to an evolutionary worldview, I can certainly understand why this is the case. To believe you are here by accident, the chance product of the collision of random molecules, can do major damage to a person’s self-worth. But the alarming thing to me is that many Christians in our great country also suffer from low self-esteem. And this should not be. As I stated in an earlier devotion, next to the Trinity Christians are the hottest things in the universe.
If you happen to be, one of those Christians, suffering from low self-esteem, then I challenge you to reflect on the following three verses from the book of Deuteronomy:
(Deuteronomy 7:6 NIV): “For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.”
(Deuteronomy 14:2 NIV): “for you are a people holy to the Lord your God. Out of all the peoples on the face of the earth, the Lord has chosen you to be his treasured possession.”
(Deuteronomy 26:18 NIV): “And the Lord has declared this day that you are his people, his treasured possession as he promised, and that you are to keep all his commands.”
Three times the Lord declares that His people are a treasured possession. As a Christian you are by definition a treasured possession to Jesus. I love this phrase because when I have a treasured possession, I cherish it and hold it in the highest esteem. And my friends that’s exactly how God views you! In fact, you are so valuable to God that He sent His own Son to die on the cross to redeem you back to Himself – now that’s special!
Not only are you a treasured possession to the Lord, but God has an amazing amount of precious thoughts toward you; for we read: “How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them!” (Psalm 139:17). And if that were not enough to convince you that God is plain crazy about you, just listen to what God says concerning you in (1 Peter 2:9): “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” Imagine the Creator of the universe says you are chosen, royal, holy, and special!
As a child of God your value to God is truly monumental. So, the next time you are feeling down look up to the Lord and rejoice for His love for you endures forever!
