Atheistic Scientists and the Schizophrenic Nature of Truth

In a recent devotion called, Science and Christianity – Some Random Observations, Dave, made the following fascinating comment in relation to atheistic scientists: “They are also the most schizophrenic people we know as they search for truth all the while suppressing truth in unrighteousness.”

These atheistic scientists, like their Christian counterparts, both perform science with the same goal – to discover truth. And when it comes to discovering the truth about origins science must give way to faith since science depends on observable and repeatable experimentation, which is impossible, since we can’t observe and repeat origins. I also like what Dave shared when he said: “To ‘follow the science’ means to follow the opinions, theories, and conclusions of people. That requires a belief in intangibles which requires faith; therefore, atheistic scientists are some of the most religious people we know.” It’s hard to think of atheistic scientists as people of faith but when it comes to the question of origins, since science can’t be used, the only thing they are left with is faith.

And here lies the schizophrenic nature of these atheistic scientists. On the one hand they say that science doesn’t depend on faith at all, but only on what we can observe, and yet they must exercise faith when it comes to origins since they can’t observe or repeat how everything in the universe began. And when it comes to searching for the truth about origins this is where (Romans 1:18-20) exposes these atheistic scientists: “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”

God clearly states that these atheistic scientists while searching for the truth, which they believe is evolution, deny the truth, which they can plainly see all around them that there must be a God who created everything. Since these scientists rule out any possibility of the supernatural, they are left with evolution as the only game in town. Even though they know our universe is so infinitely complex that it must have originated by an all-powerful Creator, they rule God out because it, I believe, would mean they would have to bow to Him and give Him glory instead of themselves. The key word here is they “suppress” the truth they know in their hearts because of their pride.

If only these atheistic, evolutionary scientists realized that some of the greatest scientists of all time were strong Bible believing Christians perhaps they would begin to change their concept and suppression of the truth. Men such as Newton, Boyle, Kepler, Faraday and many other of our greatest scientists of all time, were strong Christians and believed in the creation account of Genesis.

We owe a great debt to these pioneers of yesteryear. The scientists of today who have problems in finding the Bible, and its biblical account of creation, hard to reconcile with the precise, concrete and rational realm of the scientific disciplines would do well to consider the backgrounds of many scientific predecessors. For these were the men whom laid the very foundations of the modern fields of research. Perhaps if they realized how integral a role the Bible played in these geniuses’ lives and work, they just might reconsider reading this old book. Can a scientist believe in the Bible and its biblical account of creation? History shows that not only can he, but he has. Genius, discovery and the Bible have long been companions in the quest for truth.
