Have you ever stopped to meditate on the holiness of God? One of the most wonderful joys in the Christian life is delighting in the holiness of God. Of all the attributes of God, His holiness, is the one I find myself attracted to the most because when I think of God, the first thing I think about is His absolute holiness. I think Nancy Leigh DeMoss helps us here when she speaks of holiness: “True holiness isn’t cold and deadening – it’s warm and inviting. It’s irresistible. Those who think otherwise have never seen it, but only its caricatures.”1
R. C. Sproul goes even a step further and lets us know that if we are not delighting in the holiness of God we are really out of touch with the Lord: “If you don’t delight in the fact that your Father is holy, holy, holy, then youare spiritually dead. You may be in a church. You may go to a Christian school. But if there is no delight in your soul for the holiness of God, you don’t know God. You don’t love God. You’re out of touch with God. You’re asleep to his character.”2
Since God’s holiness is one of His most defining characteristics how can we not yearn to know more of this attribute. According to A. W. Pink: “Everything in Scripture has in view the promotion of holiness.”3 As a result my heart’s desire is to learn as much as I can about God’s holiness and to live a life of holiness. And the reason is simple. The more I delight in and live a life of holiness, the more I will experience the awe of the Lord, abundant joy, and be filled with an overwhelming sense of the presence of Jesus in my life – and what can be more wonderful than this!
Another reason why I so delight in the Lord and His holiness was summed up well by Nathanael Emmons: “Holiness has love for its essence, humility for its clothing, the good of others as its employment, and the honor of God as its end.”4 What a wonderful way to live life! Imagine, the more we delight in the holiness of God and the more we make it our goal in life to live holy, the closer we will find our hearts aligning with the Word and will of our Savior. And when this happens get ready for a life filled with joy unspeakable and full of glory!
In closing, may all of us who call Jesus our Lord pray this beautiful prayer from Randy Alcorn: “Oh, God show me more of Your holiness. Show me more of my sinfulness. Help me to hate sin and to love righteousness as You do. Grant me a deeper conviction of sin and a more thorough spirit of repentance. And make me holy as You are holy.”5
