Insight and understanding are valuable companions on life’s journey. Together, they are another name for wisdom. The question is how can one gain this wisdom? I believe our old friend, Psalm 119, has the answer for we read: “I have more insight than all my teachers, for I meditate on your statutes.” (Psalm 119:99). And the exciting thing is that true wisdom is available to all who read and meditate on the Scriptures.
And while having a good education is important it is not a necessary requirement for obtaining true wisdom. I like how Theodore Roosevelt shared this thought when he said: “A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education.”1 And I might add that the wisdom one can obtain from meditating on the Scriptures is so much better than worldly wisdom because this wisdom comes straight from God and not the world.
The Bible tells us in (James 1:5-6): “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.” Here we find the secret to obtaining godly wisdom. One, we must ask God for it. Two, we must believe He will supply it. And three, we must meditate on Scripture daily.
This three-part sequence of asking God, believing God, and meditating on Scripture will all but guarantee godly wisdom will become yours in abundance. And on the road of life this type of wisdom is essential if we are to live life to the fullest. Without this wisdom, I believe, we will just be stumbling through life, missing out on all the blessings that our God has in store for us.
My friends, more education may get you a better job, but godly wisdom will always give you a better life!
