There are so many reasons why I contend we should rejoice in the Word of God. But the number one reason is expressed by the psalmist: “I rejoice at Your word as one who finds great treasure.” (Psalm 119:162). My friends, when you open your Bible, you are holding in your hands the most amazing, influential, intellectually sound, and transformational book ever written.
As you journey through the Bible’s pages you are guaranteed to find nuggets of pure gold that will delight the soul, comfort the heart, and bring rich meaning into your life. Yes, reading the Bible is like going on a great treasure hunt where the chief objective is to fall more in love with its author – Jesus Christ!
I know in my own life, as I read the Scriptures, I have tucked away in my heart many Bible verses that help me lead a rich and rewarding life. Below are just a few verses that I have found to be so rich in meaning that I cherish them every time I read them.
(Psalm 119:18)
“Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law.”
As I open my Bible this verse is the prayer of my heart. It serves as the cry of my heart that as I read the Scriptures, I know that I am reading sacred and divinely inspired words that can bring great joy to my soul.
(Psalm 119:72)
“The law of Your mouth is better to me than thousands of coins of gold and silver.”
While owning gold and silver is nice, they are just dead pieces of metal. However, the Bible is jammed packed with deeply soul satisfying verses that will delight the heart as we read and meditate on them.
(Genesis 50:20)
“But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive.”
In the book of Genesis, we read how Joseph’s brothers, out of jealousy, sold him into slavery. Only many years later did his brothers come face to face with Joseph, who was now basically the Prime Minister of Egypt. Joseph’s brothers meant evil for him, but God turned the tables and used Joseph to save many people during the great famine in Egypt. In God’s sovereignty He decrees to regulate and control the results of our sinful self-determined choice. So, while God permitted His free creatures to sin, He also purposed to overrule it and the evil that results from it. I love this verse because it shows how God can work all things for ultimate good in my life even when I make poor choices.
(John 3:16)
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
There is a reason that this verse has been translated into more languages than any other verse in the Bible. Knowing that God sent His son to die for my sins is the most amazing display of love I can ever fathom. But knowing that by this act of love, I can know with certainty that I will be granted eternal life with Christ is a thought that is truly mind blowing!
(Deuteronomy 14:2)
“for you are a people holy to the Lord your God. Out of all the peoples on the face of the earth, the Lord has chosen you to be his treasured possession.”
The idea that the Creator of the universe loves me so much that He calls me His treasured possession lets me know how valuable I am to God. This thought not only gives me great intrinsic value, but it lights up my heart with pure joy, just knowing how cherished I am to God.
My friends, I encourage you to begin your own treasure hunt by reading Scripture and exploring its depths. I am confident you will not be disappointed!
