Inspiring Quotes from John Piper – Part III

lighthouse

Back in November 2022 I shared a series of quotes from a wonderful reformed theologian named John Piper. Below are just a few more of his many inspiring quotes on the majesty, wonder and awe of God. I pray they inspire you on your walk with the Lord.1

“Prayer is not for the enhancement of our comforts but for the advancement of Christ’s kingdom.”

“Let us labor to memorize the Word of God–for worship and for warfare. If we do not carry it in our heads, we cannot savor it in our hearts or wield it in the Spirit.”

“The key that unlocks the treasure chest of God’s peace is faith in the promises of God.”

“God, keep me warm to your grace. Help me to be endlessly astounded that in Jesus you’ve shown such amazing favor to such an undeserving rebel as me.”

“Quoting Scripture texts is different than shaping a worldview around them.”

“Life is too precious to squander on trivial things. Grant us, Lord, the unswerving resolve to pray and live with David Brainerd’s urgency: ‘Oh, that I might never loiter on my heavenly journey!’”

“The call of Christ is a call to live a life of sacrifice and loss and suffering–a life that would be foolish to live if there were no resurrection from the dead.”

“Christ is our safety, and he is our magnet, drawing us to himself, pulling us along a path marked out with his own feet, into a heaven opened to us by his crushed body.”

“The most precious gifts you can think of are not ends in themselves. They all lead to God. Ultimately, that is what all His gifts are for.”

“Not to enjoy God is to dishonor Him.”

“You should never count God out. What He has planned and dreamed for your life far exceeds the circumstances of your day. He is always at work, painting on a canvas bigger than we can see or imagine. Not only is this true today; it’s been true of our entire story to this point.”

“We make a god out of whatever we find most joy in. So, find your joy in God and be done with all idolatry.”

“I know of no other way to triumph over sin long-term than by faith to die with Christ to our old seductions, that is, to gain a distaste for them because of a superior satisfaction in God.”

“Prayer is where we agree with God that he is who he says he is and we are who he says we are.”

“The Calvary road with Jesus is not a joyless road. It is a painful one, but it is a profoundly happy one. When we choose the fleeting pleasures of comfort and security over the sacrifices and sufferings of missions and evangelism and ministry and love, we choose against joy.”

“The great purpose of prayer is not getting things from God but getting God.”

“In his cross and resurrection, Christ has taken our sin-sick hearts under his care, and he will not finish until the cure is complete (Phil. 1:6).”

“One of the things pleasing in God’s sight is that his people keep on drawing near to him forever and ever. And so, he is working in us this very thing.”

“Keep Christ as the blazing center, and you will be satisfied; the world will be served; and God will be glorified.”
