Meaning

Just who are you? Where are you going in life? And why are you here in the first place? Without a firm knowledge of a definite God, the only answers to these three questions can be: I am nothing but an insignificant speck in a universe of infinite dimensions. My destination, in my short life of seventy to ninety years, is back to eternal nothingness. And the reason I am here is because my great-great-great-etc. grandparents, who were nothing but random molecules, one day, by chance, happened to collide.

But when we become a member of the family of God, through Jesus the Son, meaning of incredible magnitude becomes our permanent possession. The answers to these three who, where, and why questions now finally make sense.

God’s Word tells us a little about who you now are: “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ…” (Romans 8:16-17) Imagine being a joint-heir with the Creator of the universe! And that’s exactly who the Bible says we are.

Our final resting place is no longer the grave as you may have thought before, but the eternal watering hole of God – heaven. (I John 5:11) is quite clear on this point: “And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.”

Finally, the reason we exist is just plain exciting to see. First, we now live to give glory to God. Just as a little child receives the greatest satisfaction possible by doing things that please his parents and make them proud of him or her, we now live to please our heavenly Father. This we do through worshiping Him and praising His holy name.

Second, we exist to help other people in all areas possible. (Ephesians 2:10) says: “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”

Finally, we were created to be the recipients of a great myriad of blessings; both present and future. Great peace, unspeakable joy, and a real purpose for living are now ours – gifts from our wonderful heavenly Father. And we already know that everlasting life is our future reward!
