The Accessibility of God

Imagine having an exclusive dinner date with the President of the United States! What an amazing opportunity to talk with the most powerful man in the entire world. But as awesome as this may seem it pales in comparison to the incredible access we have as Christians to the sovereign God of the universe. Not only do we have complete access to the Lord but He desires our company and is always willing to welcome us into His presence. I love how author Philip Yancey puts it: “That is the kind of shocking accessibility conveyed in Jesus’ word Abba. God may be the Sovereign Lord of the Universe, but through his Son, God has made himself as approachable as any doting human father.”1

Just think of it, weak and sinful people according to the Scriptures have access into the very presence of an omnipotent and holy God. For we read: “For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father.” (Ephesians 2:18). In this wonderful verse we see all three members of the Trinity acting in perfect concert to usher us into the very presence of God. For the moment we come to faith in Christ we immediately have the full resources of the Trinity to draw upon. Before we come to Christ, as unredeemed sinners, we have no right or worthiness to access the Father. But as believers we have been granted that right through faith in Christ’s sacrificial death. It’s as if Christ is our agent through whose credentials we have access to the Father. And praise God, we see here the Holy Spirit presenting us before the heavenly throne of God the Father, where we can come as often as we desire.

We also see another precious verse that talks about our access to God in (Ephesians 3:12) where we read: “in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through faith in Him.” Here we see that we can come into God’s presence at any time not in our own confidence but in Christ-confidence. And since God is our “Abba” Father we can come boldly knowing how much God loves us and enjoys intimacy with us.

The bottom line about our direct access to God is that it is all through the shed blood of Christ on Calvary’s cross. I am so grateful that I can now approach the throne of grace with both boldness and the assurance that I am welcome at all times. So, the next time you approach God in prayer why not start your conversation in praise and thanksgiving for this incredible privilege of direct access to the very throne room of our great and awesome Abba Father!
