The Happy Soul

In yesterday’s devotion we shared that the way to live a satisfied life is to totally surrender our will to the leading of the Lord. Today, I would like to talk about another aspect of how we can continually experience a truly happy soul, in both the good times and the trying times.

I believe that David in (Psalm 27:4) offers us a wonderful picture of how to continually have a “happy soul,” when he said: “One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.” I love the phrase, “to gaze on the beauty of the Lord.” To me every time I meditate on the beauty of the Lord my soul gets filled with excitement, peace, and overflowing joy, because our God is so awesome. As if to echo David’s thoughts, Arthur W. Pink shared the following: “Happy the soul that has been awed by a view of God’s majesty.”1

Have you gazed on the beauty of the Lord lately? Have you been awed recently by viewing God’s majesty? If not, then I ask you to take time out of your busy day and just meditate on God’s awesome majesty. I guarantee that if you do this, and start contemplating on His wonders, you will get lost in His presence and be filled with awe. And I content that the more you fill your heart and mind with thoughts of the majesty of God the happier your soul will become.

Whether you choose to focus on God’s amazing love for you, His infinite power to have created the universe out of nothing, or His promise of giving you eternal life, awe should well up in your soul, and with this awe, a joyful bliss and state of contentment in your innermost being. Is it any wonder that the psalmist proclaimed in (Psalm 84:10): “Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.” For you see being in the house of the Lord is such a wonderful place to worship Jesus and stand in awe of His majesty.

May I leave you with the following two quotes to help you ponder just how amazing and awesome a God we serve. So the next time your soul is troubled I ask you to shift your attention from yourself and your woes to Jesus and His majesty!

“Our sins are debts that none can pay but Christ. It is not our tears, but His blood; it is not our sighs, but His sufferings, that can testify for our sins. Christ must pay all, or we are prisoners forever.”2 – Thomas Brooks

“Consider Jesus. Know Jesus. Learn what kind of Person it is you say you trust and love and worship. Soak in the shadow of Jesus. Saturate your soul with the ways of Jesus. Watch Him. Listen to Him. Stand in awe of Him. Let Him overwhelm you with the way He is.”3 – John Piper
