The Importance of Daily Bible Reading

I cannot stress how important it is to develop the habit of reading the Bible every day. Just as daily food is needed to build and maintain our physical health, daily Bible reading is the nourishment needed to build and maintain a healthy soul and spirit.

J. C. Ryle states the case for daily Bible reading as follows: “Read the Bible every day. Make it a part of every day’s business to read and meditate on some portion of God’s Word. Private means of grace are just as needful every day for our souls as food and clothing are for our bodies. Yesterday’s meal will not feed the worker today, and today’s meal will not feed the worker tomorrow. Do as the Israelites did in the wilderness. Gather your manna fresh every morning. Choose your own periods and hours. Do not hurry your reading. Give your Bible the best and not the worst part of your time. But whatever plan you pursue, let it be a rule of your life to visit the throne of grace and the Bible every day.”1

Before I became a Christian, in 1981, I filled my mind with the usual dose of daily negativity from watching the news on TV and reading the newspaper. (There was no internet back then). Now I read my Bible daily and fill my heart, mind, and soul with peace, joy, and the power that is sorely needed to combat all the negative energy and seductive temptations that are constantly vying for my attention.

The Bible is our light source in our dark world. It’s our compass to guide us through the minefields of temptation all around us. It’s the only absolute source of truth in a world where unfortunately truth like beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It’s our shield to protect us from the fiery darts of the wicked one. And its words, when we proclaim them with boldness and faith, cause Satan to flee.

Ask yourself if you aren’t reading the Bible daily, what are you filling your mind with? There is nothing more important than filling your mind with the Word of God. It will provide you with incomparable wisdom, essential truth, peace and joy, and amazing power and positive energy.

Most books present their readers with a theme, some story information, perhaps entertainment, and a conclusion. These books are read, but after a while fade into our distant memories. But the Bible is not called the “Book of books” for nothing. The Bible, unlike other books, allows us to mine for hidden treasures, within its pages, that are worth more than gold, and will fill us with awe and wonder as we gaze at our Lord and Savior – Jesus Christ!

With so many blessings that await us as we read the Bible how foolish are those Christians who seldom read this amazing book. I challenge you to read your Bible daily. You just may find yourself embarking on a scenic tour into a world you never dreamed could exist!
