The Madness and Sadness of the Evolutionist

William Herschel, the great astronomer once said: The undevout astronomer must be mad.1 And, I believe, that this can apply to those who believe in Darwinian evolution.

Lee Strobel, the former hard core atheist, turned Christian apologist, shares six reasons why those who believe in evolution are living in the land of make believe. I will briefly comment on his six points that he made in the following quote: “Looking at the doctrine of Darwinism, which undergirded my atheism for so many years, it didn’t take me long to conclude that it was simply too far-fetched to be credible. I realized that if I were to embrace Darwinism and its underlying premise of naturalism, I would have to believe that: 1. Nothing produces everything 2. Non-life produces life 3. Randomness produces fine-tuning 4. Chaos produces information 5. Unconsciousness produces consciousness 6. Non-reason produces reason….The central pillars of evolutionary theory quickly rotted away when exposed to scrutiny.”2

Point 1 – Nothing produces everything

To believe that nothing can produce anything, like a human being, takes a lot of faith. But to believe that nothing can produce everything, like a universe, would be like believing that an ant can read and understand the Wall Street Journal. Talk about blind faith – and you have arrived in the evolutionist’s world of faith.

Point 2 – Non-life produces life

This idea of spontaneous generation, that life can come from non-life, was conclusively demonstrated, in the 1800’s, to be false, by perhaps the greatest biologist of all time, Louis Pasteur. There are no serious scientists today that hold to this belief, yet for Darwinian evolution to have occurred, spontaneous generation would have had to take place somewhere in the beginning of time.

Point 3 – Randomness produces fine-tuning

It is a well-known fact that our universe is exquisitely fine-tuned to allow for life. The orderliness of our universe and the amazingly constant natural laws that God put in place to allow for this orderliness is mindboggling. To think that randomness could produce these laws of nature again takes far more faith than I can muster.

Point 4 – Chaos produces information

According to many scientists today, they believe that our universe came about through a “Big Bang” several billion years ago. There is one thing we can all agree upon and that is explosions create chaos. To think that chaos can somehow create meaningful information, which is the key to the genetic make-up of life, is absurd in the highest.

Point 5 – Unconsciousness produces consciousness

To think that we started with nothing, then a great cosmic explosion came about, that produced dead non-living matter, that subsequently produced the exquisite order of our universe, and finally created life with the ability to think is one long series of leaps of blind faith; which leads me to point 6.

Point 6 – Non-reason produces reason

The above five points have one thing in common – none of them appeal to any rational person’s reasonable senses. Evolution by definition has no reason behind it. It is purely based on blind chance and accident and since when does this combination of activities produce reason? The evolutionist’s mantra of nobody time nothing equals everything is just not reasonable. And this leads me to a seventh point that Lee Strobel didn’t mention.

Point 7 – Evolution produces meaning

If you believe in evolution then you must believe that you came from nothing and when you die you go back to nothing. And somehow for the brief 60 to 100 years of accidental life here on earth you must try to find meaning between these two states of nothingness. For the evolutionist he has no idea where he came from, where he is going when he dies, and what his purpose here on earth is, if he is only here by a fortuitous accident. He must indeed lead a lonely and sad life since rather than believing that he is created in the image of God, and, therefore has great intrinsic value, his only alternative is to believe he was created with no image and no meaning and the knowledge that one day he will return back to nothing.
