The Miracle of Conversion

While most miracles can be seen outwardly, there is one miracle that happens inside of a person that often doesn’t get classified as a miracle – and that of course is the born again conversion of an individual to Christ. And the reason this is a miracle is because mankind, by nature. according to (Ephesians 2:1) is totally dead in his sin, for we read: “As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins.”

Charles Spurgeon states the case as follows: “We declare, upon Scriptural authority, that the human will is so desperately set on mischief, so depraved, and so inclined to everything that is evil, and so disinclined to everything that is good, that without the powerful, supernatural, irresistible influence of the Holy Spirit, no human will ever be constrained towards Christ.”1

Thus, without a supernatural move of the Holy Spirit conversion to Christ is impossible. And whenever the Holy Spirit moves supernaturally in a human heart, we can classify it as a miracle. But in order to classify conversion as a miracle we need to see that mankind is indeed totally dead in his sin.

Yet, of all the doctrines in Scripture perhaps the most hated is the doctrine of the total depravity of man. When we share the gospel with someone, yes, it is important to tell them that God loves them, but to leave out the fact that they are born sinners and rebels against God, as well as totally depraved in their thoughts and behaviors, withholds from them the key to helping them see their desperate need for Christ.

But the Bible says that man can do nothing to earn his way back to God. He is totally dead in his sin and hopelessly lost. Not only that but he has no desire to seek after God and since he is totally dead in his sin, no capacity to search after God. And that my friends is why we must share this doctrine of man being totally depraved, as unpopular as it is, to help our lost friends and family, and those we are sharing the gospel with, realize that on their own they can do nothing to find God.

As a result, if God does not intervene supernaturally there is no way a dead sinner can find His way to Jesus. In effect God does spiritual surgery on the human heart and gives those who come to Christ a brand new heart. And that my friends is a miracle!
