The Paradox of Christian Love

stacked of stones outdoors

When we think about Christian love the word agape comes to my mind. This type of love is a selfless love that believers in Christ have toward one another. Agape love is not based on feelings since we love others not based on mutual attraction but based on the fact that all people have intrinsic value because they are made in the image of God and are therefore worthy of being valued and loved. To the world love is based on mutual attraction but to the Christian we show and demonstrate love based on mutual humanity.

I love how A. W. Tozer shows the paradox of Christian love when he stated: “Jesus Christ knows the worst about you. Nonetheless, He is the one who loves you the most.”1 This type of love is supernatural, and we can only show it toward others when we are transformed by the Holy Spirit, who dwells in us when we come to Christ. It’s the Holy Spirit that gives us the capacity to love the unlovable and put into practice what we read in (Matthew 5:44): “But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you.”

My friends Christianity is full of paradoxes. If you are interested in diving deeper into some of these paradoxes, I have provided below links to five of my earlier devotions on some other Christian paradoxes that I pray you take a look at. I believe they will encourage you in your walk with the Lord:
