As Christians we are so blessed to have the greatest book ever written on how to lead a rich and rewarding life – the Holy Bible! While not everyone can afford a good college education or attend a seminary, everyone can read, study and meditate on God’s holy Word. I love how Pastor David Jeremiah puts it: “Though not everyone can attend seminary, every Christian has a seminary between two covers – the Holy Bible. God’s Word is a school that trains us for the work He has planned for us on earth.”1
In fact, if I had a choice of going to college or studying my Bible, I would choose the latter. Our 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, said it so well: “A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education.”2
According to the website, Motivane.com: “Roosevelt, challenges us to reconsider the value of traditional education compared to spiritual wisdom. In today’s fast-evolving society, where academic credentials are highly prized, this statement serves as a reminder that intellectual knowledge alone may not provide the moral guidance and deeper understanding necessary for a fulfilled and principled life. The Bible, as a foundational text for millions around the world, offers ethical teachings, life lessons, and spiritual truths that influence character development, decision-making, and community values. In modern life, this quote urges us to balance formal education with moral and spiritual learning that enriches our perspective beyond textbooks and lecture.”3
The Holy Bible is our moral compass, our training grounds for eternity instruction manual, and the book that gives us the Rosetta Stone to finding rich and rewarding meaning in life. Its teachings transcend time and culture, its wisdom is better than finding gold, and its central theme of how to get to know our Creator, Jesus Christ, puts us in touch with eternity here on earth and the opportunity to experience amazing joy and ultimate purpose in life.
The Bible is history. The Bible is a first-rate history book that promises to send any history buff into a state of sheer ecstasy. The Bible is full of poetry. The Book of Psalms is world-renowned for its literary style and excellence of composition. It’s philosophy. The Holy Scriptures have more to say about human nature and what life is all about than Plato, Socrates, Aristotle, Confucius and Freud combined. It’s science. Once again not only does the Bible talk authoritatively on many areas in the scientific realm, but it has been the indispensable mentor of many of the greatest scientific men of all time.
It’s inspirational. Jesus’ teachings on the Sermon on the Mount, the Psalms, the Ten Commandments and the continuous love of God for mankind have down through the centuries been the pillars on which millions have anchored their faith. No book can generate more comfort, encouragement and purpose for life than the Bible. So many great masterpieces of art, literature, music and film have been created by people touched with the message of God that our world would be deprived of much of its very heart and soul if it were deprived of this one book.
And finally, as Pastor Jeremiah shared in his quote above: “God’s Word is a school that trains us for the work He has planned for us on earth.” As we read, study, and meditate on the Scriptures we are guaranteed to find God’s will for our life, and His provision for helping us carry out that will. And when we line up with God’s will we learn the great secret that obedience to that will, sets us up to be a channel of blessing to others, a light to the lost, a beacon of truth to a world drowning in relativism, and most of all, a reflector of God’s glory for all the world to see!
My friends, read God’s Word helps us understand and concur with the psalmist when he says: “I rejoice at Your word As one who finds great treasure.” (Psalm 119:162). There is simply no other book ever written that is designed to put you in touch with Jesus, give you ultimate purpose, help you navigate this difficult journey called life, and promises you eternal life when your mission on earth is complete!
