How to Discover Truth

Is there really such a thing as absolute truth? Or is society correct in stating that truth is really relative – meaning what is true for you may not be true for me and vice versa. Clearly in American society today with so many viewpoints on social issues, truth is absolutely relative. For example, when does human life begin, and is it OK to have sex outside of marriage really depends on who you ask.

I know for myself, before I became a Christian, I believed many things to be true and right based on either doing my own research or following the opinions of my peers. Sadly, at the time, little did I realize, not only how foolish this was but how dangerous this could be.

A classic example concerned the theory of evolution. I believed that Darwinian evolution was a hard fact and the truth on how mankind came into existence. But if you asked me to provide hard evidence on why I believed evolution to be true – I had none. The reason I believed it to be true was that in college all of my peers believed it was true so I basically based my belief in following the crowd I hung out with. This is not a very good way to establish truth but so many of us do just that.

Another example, concerned the truthfulness of the Bible. I believed the Bible was a book of made up stories, not historically accurate, and clearly not a book of truth. Yet, I had never read the Bible. I was an expert on why the Bible was not a book of truth without ever opening its cover. Now that is plain foolish.

But now as a Christian for over 42 years, having read my Bible many times over, I have found that it is the only book that presents us with the absolute truth on all the matters it speaks on. And the reason that I believe this can be summed up in one word – Christ! In referring to Christ as the source of truth, I love how A. W. Pink states: “Christ is the key which unlocks the golden doors into the temple of Divine truth.”1

You see if Jesus Christ is who He says He is, the Creator of the universe and the one true God, then by definition, He is also the one true source of truth and His written revelation, the Bible, contains all the truth God wants us to know. My friends we can know absolute truth when we place our trust in the teachings of Scripture because it is inspired by God who is perfect truth!
